Local show picks: Saturday 10/17

new roman times posterNew Roman Times, STEREO IS A LIE, Bear Bones @ Ghost Room

Have you heard of Ghost Room? I hadn't until a few weeks ago. It's Austin's newest downtown music venue, taking over the space that used to be the beer bar Ginger Man at 3rd and Lavaca. Despite being in the more expensive (and often more snooty) Warehouse District, this venue seems like a great place to check out a rock show. That's why I'll be there tonight to check out one of my favorite local bands, STEREO IS A LIE. They open for New Roman Times, a post-punk/new-wave indie guitar band. The show starts at 9 with folky singer-songwriter Bear Bones. In its brief existence, Ghost Room has hosted many shows that would be more common on Red River. Is the Austin indie underground expanding? Looks like it. And STEREO frontman Glynn Wedgewood says the sound is great at the venue. Can't wait. First 10 people through the door get a high-quality print of the poster.

Download a free mp3 from STEREO IS A LIE here. Check them out on MySpace here, along with New Roman Times here and Bare Bones here. View the list of Ghost Room's upcoming shows here.

Betaplayer, Zeta Brown @ Music Gym

While I'll be checking out a new venue in the west, you can check out a new band on the east side. Music Gym, a BYOB music space along the access road of I-35 on East Sixth, hosts Zeta Brown and Betaplayer. Zeta Brown is a hip-hop-driven collaboration between local Latin alternative rockers Este Vato and the hip-hop band Betaplayer (double duty for those guys tonight). It's Zeta Brown's first show, so if you're into intelligent hip-hop or Latin music, this show should be worth your time. Watch this video of Betaplayer live at Mohawk...

The show starts at 9. Cover is $5. It's BYOB, folks. Music Gym's address is 815 E. Sixth.
