Top 20 bands announced for ACL Fest competition

sound and juryThe Sound and the Jury, an annual competition that sends one band to an opening slot at the Austin City Limits Music Festival, announced its top 20 finalists today. Online voting begins today and ends on September 18th. The top-five vote-getters will play a battle-of-the-bands-style show at Antone's the week before ACL Fest to determine the winner. The '60s-garage-rock-influenced quartet The Steps won last year. Last year's runners-up, T-Bird and the Breaks, played an impressive set at the final that won them lots of new fans. Only one of the final five bands gets to play ACL Fest, but the remaining finalists win $1,500 cash and weekend passes to the festival. So if you're a fan of any of the bands below, vote! They might not get the ACL slot, but 25% of the bands will have $1,500 in their pocket. That's worth the effort, if you ask me. Here's the top 20:
