Tonight: The Steps CD Release Show

The Steps promoWalk past the windows of Wateloo Records, and take a look at the huge album posters hanging on the glass. The usual suspects have been there all year: be it Animal Collective or Wilco or Green Day. But if you've walked by Austin's most recognizable record store lately, you've likely seen the less recognizable faces of a young group of local garage-rockers called The Steps [link]. The quartet plays a lean, mean stlye of danceable rock 'n roll that was in fashion when their parents were likely eating mac 'n cheese in elementary school. But they do it extremely well. The Steps were able to rally enough votes last year to play the Dell Lounge's Sound & the Jury battle-of-the-bands competition. The grand prize was an opening slot on the 2008 Austin City Limits Music Festival. They subsequently won the contest and played the fest. Since then, they've garnered lots of attention, playing showcases for Do512 and going on a small national tour to support their new EP Take It All In. The boys are back in town, and they play their Austin CD release party tonight at Stubb's, followed by a free in-store performance at Waterloo on Monday. Here's a video I shot a few months ago...
