Clap! Clap!, a Band I Kinda Wish Was Still Around

ClapClapClap! Clap! was rare in many regards, beyond their unique style of chaotic dance-punk. They were one of the few young Red River bands to be featured on ME Television's in-studio live performance series; one of few indie rock bands to function with eight full-time members; one of the few local bands that could make a roomful of self-conscious indie cool kids let loose and dance like there's no tomorrow; and most certainly one of the few Austin rock bands that could record a cover of a Kanye West song and have it work. Maybe it was all these unique traits and the substantial amount of cooks in the kitchen that led to the group's dissolution, just as it was on the cusp of great things. The group released an EP in 2004, and was recognized by MTVU in 2005 as one of the top-10 up-and-coming bands in the nation. That year, they were also asked to contribute a cover song to a Kanye West tribute album (which I won't upload, for copyright reasons... but I might be willing to e-mail it to curious ears). The band's fun and energetic 2007 debut album did an admirable job of capturing Clap! Clap!'s amazing live energy. Listen to a track off their debut You Love This below. I'm convinced local acts like Zlam Dunk and Neiliyo likely wouldn't exist without Clap! Clap! as their fun-loving dance-punk predecessors.

So where are they now? Well, the rhythm section is doing well, playing with two productive local bands. Bassist Louis Lemuz now lends low-end duties to neo-post-punks The Always Already. The quartet released an EP recently and is now working on a remix album. Drummer Nick Whitfield is part of the two-man drum assault of Haunting Oboe Music, a sextet that recorded and released 12 EPs last year for a total of about 50 songs. The Oboes play this Friday at Emo's with their frequent bill-mates Prayer For Animals. Most of the other members are still involved in the scene somehow (bands, studios, etc).

Reminisce about Clap! Clap! on MySpace.
