'NITES 2008 Revisited: Ume

I started filming bands exactly a year ago, so I thought it would be nice to do a "where are they now?" sort of segment. All this week, I'll bring you a video shot in July 2008 along with an update on the band.

It's been a breakout year for Ume, the power trio fronted by firecracker Lauren Larson. They got lots of press and hype coming out of SXSW and they recorded an EP with the highly respected producer Frenchie Smith. Titled Sunshower, the EP has received all kinds of praise locally and beyond. The Austin Chronicle gave it four stars, while Dave Allen (of the seminal post-punk band Gang of Four) has been gushing shamelessly about Ume since last November. I shot the following video at the under-utilized Monarch Events Center in north-central Austin. Ume was still working out its new material in preparation for its recording session. This song, titled "Moments" at the time, went on to get new lyrics and a new title: "The Conductor". Enjoy...

Ume leaves for a national tour in September, but not before playing a couple of big Texas gigs next month. Look for specific dates on the band's MySpace page.
