Today: City Council to Vote on Creation of Austin Music Department

City of Austin sealAustin City Council will vote this morning on whether or not to approve the creation of an Austin Music Department. This department would centralize all things related to promoting, supporting, and regulating live music in Austin (that includes noise ordinances, folks). The resolution is sponsored by Councilman Mike Martinez. Click here to read the revised resolution, which includes details about the proposed department. You're encouraged to come out and show your support (or lack of).

Currently, all music decisions (regulation and promotion) are spread across several city departments. This new Austin Music Department would be the one-stop shop for all music decisions. It looks like a good idea on paper. It sounds more efficient, anyway. We just have to wait on the specifics. Centralizing power can always be a tricky proposition.

The council meeting begins at 10am today (Thursday 6/18). The vote is listed as the 49th item on the agenda. Parking is free in the City Hall garage (1st and Lavaca). Be there or be square, as they say.
