ACL Fest '09: Complete lineup announced

ACL 2009

I am looking at the recently-released lineup of this year's Austin City Limits Music Festival and thinking Damn would that have been an awesome string of headliners in 1995. We'd be hearing "Crash Into Me" and "Too Much" live for the first time, and nodding our heads to our favorite tracks off Ill Communication. And we could sing along with the chorus of "Jeremy" while the song was still relatively fresh. It would be junior high all over again. Unfortunately, it's 2009 and I'm a little underwhelmed here. Can we get Radiohead to headline just once? They're the perfect headliner for any festival, and here's why: They appeal to the '90s nostalgia that drives most festival-goers but, unlike most '90s nostalgia acts, they're still making relevant and exciting music today and playing the hell out of it live. Radiohead is a fine wine (they get better with age). Pearl Jam is boxed wine that's been left open too long. Sure they have a new album coming out this year, but do you give a shit? Or are you more excited about the Ten reissue and its "Super Deluxe" packaging? Oh, well.

The middle tier is pretty solid: Ghostland Observatory, Black Joe Lewis, !!! (chk chk chk). There won't be a shortage of stuff you can dance to from the afternoon to early evening. I guess the silver lining is you'll be able to leave Zilker early and catch the amazing aftershows that are bound to happen (I'm thinking back to The Black Keys and The Black Angels at Stubb's last year).

Check out the entire festival lineup in a new window.
