nites27Austin's hip-hop scene is tough to figure out. There isn't an "Austin sound" to my knowledge. Nearby Southern cities like Houston and New Orleans have strong hip-hop identities, but Austin is kind of a hodge-podge, striving to find its sound, its identity. There's definitely a scene (there's a whole website dedicated to it). We have respected veteran emcees like Bavu Blakes, who turned heads with his electric ACL Fest performance last year. But Mr. Blakes and his Extra Plairs are just as likely to share a bill at Antone's with blues and funk artists as they are at a small hip-hop club on Sixth. We also have young up-and-coming artists like Zeale and Phranchyze, but they seem to have as many Red River indie kids for fans as they do hip-hop heads who'd never heard of The Mohawk before Ice Cube and KRS One played there a month apart from each other. I'm gonna have to dig deeper and see what I see. If you have any recommendations, go ahead and use the comment section or hit me up on MySpace. I want to know as much as I can about Austin hip-hop. In the mean time, here's a video of B.Goins and Stormshadow, who was a runner-up in the UndiscoveredAustin online battle of the bands.
