Tonight's Picks: Wednesday, Jan 21

big mess

Are we not DEVO fans? If you are, check out the Alamo Ritz theater on Sixth tonight for a special screening of the rock documentary DEVO: The Men Who Make The Music at 9:30. Local DEVO tribute band Big Mess (pictured above, courtesy Decider Austin) will be performing at the theater as well. Five bucks for the whole thing, too!

If new wave weirdness isn't so much your thing, there's always Austin's ever-growing underground '60s psychedelia revival. Club de Ville plays host to its last Psychotropic show. Psychotropic, for the uninitiated, is a weekly psych show with local bands and DJ sets by Austin's best known psych heads. Ringo Deathstarr and Christian Bland of The Black Angels play tonight's show. As always, it's free. Did I mention it's the LAST one!

Other shows: At Mohawk, acoustic sibling duo The Upper Echelon strum through folk-ified punk rock covers and a few originals. They were recently featured on 'Nites MP3 Monday. At Emo's, Austin stoner-rock veterans Tia Carrera are sure to bring eardrum-stomping 20-minute jams. If you're looking for something more bluesy but no less epic, check out Guy Forsyth at Continental Club on South Congress. And the award for "bill with the most entertaining collection of band names" goes to Beerland: Wicked Pro Wrestler, Rage Ranger, and Sexy Robots. Yeah.
