Free Week 2009: Pick of the Night, Fri 1/2

Tonight's the first night of Free Week '09. If you've fully recovered from your January 1st hangover, you should mosey on down to Red River at about 10pm. Emo's will be delivering a solid psychedelic one-two punch with shoegazers Ringo Deathstarr and neo-psych Moogsters the Boxing Lesson. Get your dance on at Beauty Bar with electro duo Gobi and the always popular DJ Prince Klassen spinning between sets. Me, personally, I'm heading over to Mohawk's indoor stage for the most diverse show of the night: Built By Snow, The Always Already, and Zlam Dunk. All three are likely to make you dance and move and get sweaty, yet they each bring a totally different sound to the the stage. Built By Snow delivers upbeat indie pop with 8-bit Nintendo sounds, catchy hooks, and anthemic choruses. The Always Already are a moodier-sounding synth-driven post-punk trio in the vain of Gang of Four. Zlam Dunk is a bit harder to describe. Picture seven dudes in basketball jerseys, average age 20, who had a little too much caffeine on their way to the venue, and at least four of them play drums and/or percussion during the show. Oh, and they have an extra tambourine and they're not afraid to lend it to a chipper audience member!
