Episode#7: Ume

The best description I've read of Ume (pronounced ooh-may), the Austin-by-way-of-Houston power-rock trio, comes from Brian McManus of the Philadelphia Weekly: "Imagine if Blonde Redhead grew some balls or if Sonic Youth got hungry again." This female-fronted powerhouse does equally well with slower shoegazey material as with hard-chargin' kick-you-in-the-face rock 'n roll. Guitarist/vocalist Lauren Larson is soft-spoken and diminutive in stature but larger than life on stage, commanding your attention with her guttural shouts and explosive distorted guitar riffs. Under the red stage lights, Larson's blonde hair looks like wild flames as she twists and flails to the music. Matched with her husband Eric Larson's punchy basslines and drummer Jeff Barrera's steady and at times propulsive kit work, Ume is a hard combo to beat. I guess what I'm trying to say is, watch this damn video.

Filmed July 26, 2008 at the Monarch Event Center off Middle Fiskville Rd, behind the Highland Mall.
